I’ve written quite a few heavy posts lately so thought I’d lighten the mood by getting involved with this tag. Also, lots of the people in my real-life are forever asking me questions about makeup and my opinions on products, so I thought it’d be great to share my ideas with everyone in one post! I’d thought I’d better do a post like this as I love reading these sort of tags and finding out what other ordinary makeup hoarders/obsessives like myself use because frankly, I’m more than a bit nosy!
1. How do you make your lipstick / lip gloss last longer?
I have to be honest, I tend to put a little foundation on my lips when applying my base. It looks so weird but my lips are naturally very pink and I try to make them as neutral as possible before applying a lip colour. Next, I apply a thin layer of NYX Lip Primer before blotting with a clean tissue to remove any excess.
2. Which online makeup store is your absolute favourite?
Well it absolutely has to be Revolution Beauty because the products are affordable and absolutely incredible. The range is huge and there are always new releases and innovative products as well as amazing dupes.
3. Who is your favourite You Tuber at the moment?
I have all the love in the world for Sam and Nic from Pixiwoo because I have watched them from the beginning and just love their chatty style. I find them so easy to relate to because not only are they my age and mothers, they also talk about Sam’s battle with anxiety and Nic’s battle with MS. I love the makeup that they do as it ranges from how-to guides for beginners to some quite editorial looks meaning there is something to suit every need.
4. Which colour(s) go with your eyes?
This is something that I have never really thought about. I’m from the ‘makeup is about self-expression’ school of thought and as long as you aren’t being offensive or hurting yourself or others with your makeup, wear what the hell you want. Personally, I tend to err on the side of golds, oranges, reds, browns and bronzes but I do need to try and venture into cooler colours especially my favourite colour which is green.
5. Favourite drugstore mascara?
Maybelline make the best mascara, except for the Great Lash mascara which I’ve never understood the love for. All other Maybelline mascaras are absolutely amazing with my current favourite being the Push Up Drama in Very Black because it makes my very stubby little lashes look great which is not easy.
6. What do you use to apply your foundation?
When I’m doing my own foundation I use a combination of my fingers and a blending sponge mostly for speed. If I’m doing someone else’s makeup or I’ve got more time to do my own, I tend to use the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. Its short and dense fibres are great for buffing foundation in to the skin and giving a natural look.
7. What is the difference between an eye primer and an eye base?
I’ve often wondered this myself. I tend to think of a primer as a thinner consistency, which helps powder eye shadow adhere to the lid and prevents creasing. An eye base tends to be of a slightly thicker consistency and helps to intensify the colour of your eye shadow. If I’m wrong, feel free to correct me!
8. Tinted Moisturizer, BB Cream or Foundation?
Always foundation! I have acne scarring from not listening to my mother 20 years ago and dark circles courtesy of my children. I need all the help I can get to create a flawless base. However, if you have great skin to start with, use the absolute bare minimum and enjoy it before age does a number on your skin.
9. How do you prep your face for makeup?
Each morning, I use whichever light moisturiser has arrived in that month’s beauty subscription boxes and always follow it by liberally spritzing my face with the Revolution Aqua Priming Base to make sure that my makeup goes on smoothly and stays put all day.
10. What are some inexpensive makeup brushes?
Have I already mentioned how much I love Real Techniques? Their brushes are amazing. I also love the Primark brushes which are great value and start at around £1.
11. When did you start wearing makeup?
I was such a late starter with makeup and didn’t buy anything at all until I was 15 when I received a massive set of Boots No.7 makeup from one of my aunts for my birthday much to mum’s displeasure. Even though the colour match was completely off, I loved it and wore makeup all the time from that point on. I probably didn’t seriously get into makeup until I started my first proper job in my early twenies and could afford to explore more with colours and textures that suited my skin tone and type more.
12. Favourite concealer?
My current favourite concealer by a country mile has to be the new Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define concealer. It comes in a range of shades, gives great coverage, lasts for ages and only costs £4. Bargain.
13. Tricks to make your eyelashes longer?
The only thing that I do to make my short, stubby lashes look longer is to draw a thin line of eye liner close to the base of my lashes to make them look fuller and longer. I’ve never used false lashes before as I’m blind as a bat without my glasses and don’t trust myself not to glue my eyelids together!
14. Favourite drugstore lip product?
I quite like using the NYX lip lingerie range and there are so many of them to choose from. They do take some getting used to as they are quite thick and can be sticky by the shade range is beautiful and they are pretty long lasting.
15. Cream or powder eye shadow?
Always powder. I’ve yet to find a cream eye shadow that doesn’t crease or disappear from my extremely oily lids.
